Wiener schnitzel, the national dish of Austria, is something you can’t leave Germany without trying. It is a very thin slice of pork, breaded, deep-fried then topped with lemon or a mushroom sauce…. simply delicious. Often served with a side of potatoes.
Germans are known for their delicious sausages so, of course, you must try currywurst. There has been an ongoing debate for generations over who has the best sauce to top the sausage. Look for restaurants that use a special homemade curry and tomato sauce because those are most likely the winners.
In almost every bakery in Germany you will see pretzels in the window. Sounds simple, but there is nothing like an authentic German pretzel. Before baking the dough it is covered in a special pretzel solution and then glazed with butter. YUM. Also, they are often quite cheap so that’s a bonus.
Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest Cake)
Traditionally, Black Forest cake consists of layers of chocolate cake, whipped cream and cherries. This special cake gets its’ name from the liquor that originated in the Black Forest mountain region and is made with distilled cherries. There is a German statutory claiming that this cake can only be marketed as Black Forest if the special liquor ingredient exists in the cake.
