Getting Settled Abroad

Once the jet lag wears off, it’s time to get settled in your new home. From my experience it is of the utmost importance that you feel comfortable and start off this amazing semester the right way.If you start off organized and prepared, it will help you maintain your sanity in this foreign country.

First, explore your surroundings. Find out where the closest grocery store is, the cheapest laundromat, which convenient store is open the latest, etc. If you do this in the very beginning, you will quickly fall into a routine.

Second, remember you will be traveling almost every weekend. PLAN ACCORDINGLY! Stock up on mini tooth pastes, extra towels, comfortable clothes for the bus, anything that you need to put your mind at ease. Always remember to unpack the DAY you get home. If you don’t, you will find yourself living out of your suitcase.

Third, budget your money and time. Sit down and take an hour to write down everything you want to do, how many days of the week you should be cooking, how many hours should be dedicated to studying, what do you NEED to do before you go home.

Don’t let these 4 short months get away from you. Feel settled and be prepared so you can make the most of your time in your new home.
