When you walk into the Funny Farm Hostel in Interlaken, be prepared to be greeted by an unusual tour guide. Spliff, the massive St. Bernard who calls this hostel home, saunters around the lobby of the Funny Farm at all hours of the day, sniffing backpacks and looking for people to share bits of the delicious hamburgers that the kitchen offers or even a sip of beer.
For those who live for the rush of adrenaline, Interlaken is one of the world’s most beautiful playgrounds. Situated between two pristine lakes at the base of the Swiss Alps, this city will definitely show you a good time. With organized trips for skydiving, canyoning, paragliding, white-water rafting and so much more, Interlaken thrives on action, and the non-stop energy of this town infects everyone who visits.
Taking a walk through the town, I discovered that the Swiss don’t mess around when it comes to food. When it gets cold, the Swiss warm up with giant salty pretzels, hash browns loaded with cheese and bacon, and mugs of hot chocolate. After a long day of canyoning, the extra carbs are necessary to have enough energy for a night out on the town.
Even without the extreme sports, there are plenty of activities in Interlaken for those who’d rather keep two feet on the ground. Mountain bikes and fun carts are available to rent around the city for a drive up into the countryside, where the mountains of Lauterbrunnen offer incredible views of the 72 waterfalls scattered around the cliffs.
If you just can’t stand the thought of visiting another museum, Interlaken is the best choice for a weekend of excitement and new experiences. Whether you’re looking for adventure or not, you’re sure to have an unforgettable time in the Swiss Alps.
